Happy Weekend and Reader Questions Answered

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

HAPPY FRIDAY!

house to home

This is probably not an image that one would typically post smack dab in the middle of winter (actually it's probably not even the middle yet) but I couldn't resist.  It's snowing here again today, as it has almost every day for the last month, and the snow is white, pretty and all that, but this image makes me dream of the days when we'll see scenes like this again. :-) And how pretty is the honeysuckle in this image???!!!

On another note. I had some questions on the image above from this post.  I've already exchanged e-mails with the readers who asked the questions, but I thought some of you may want to know the answers too...

Question 1 -  Last week you showed a beautiful C picture, do you  know the author or how I could get in touch with the gallery?

Answer:  When she first asked this question, I could have sworn I had seen someone do a post on the origin of this sign but could not remember who for the life of me.  A few google searches turned up The Zhush's post, and she's got all the answers for you!  Find out all the details here...

Question 2 - Where can I find this coffee table?

Answer:  I think I found it at Jayson Home and Garden and it actually comes in three different sizes, but it's definitely not in the budget for the reader that asked (or for me).

This one from Wisteria is similar, but it only comes in white and is more of a side table size (although you could use two or three for a coffee table).

Does anyone else have any ideas/sources for this table?

Caring For, Cleaning and Restoring Silver - Reader Question

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

BHG.com

This is a comment/reader question that was left on the Decorating With Silver Trays post: "I have a slight addiction to silver trays. For some reason I always find ones that I MUST have when I go to the thrift stores!!  I'm curious though if anyone has any ideas on how to make one shine again? I bought a beautifully shaped tray, but the inside of it looks like all of the silver has worn away. :( Any Ideas? I would love to keep it metal and not paint it if I can."

Not being any sort of an expert on silver, at all,  I did a little research to see who might be.  I'm sure this post doesn't cover all of the possible sources and information, but it's a summary of what I found.  I hope it will be helpful to Leslie, who asked the question, and to anyone else who is trying to care for, clean or restore any of their silver pieces or silverware.

Do It Yourself Projects From Extreme Makeover and Wallpaper Sources

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

I'm a fan of Extreme Makeover Home Edition (sometimes I like the designs and sometimes I don't) because I love to watch the way everyone comes together to help a complete stranger have a better life. It's a good way to start out my week being reminded that every day that we're healthy and life is fairly "normal" with all of the little things in place that we take for granted, it is a day to be grateful for.

Anywho, last Sunday the designers made a huge chandelier out of doors for the foyer. It was way too big to fit in most of our average sized homes, but it was a fun DIY concept and I thought you all might like to see it, if you didn't see the show. Unfortunately, the only image I could find of the project was the one door above.

BUT. When I was on the website, I noticed that they have tutorials for DIY projects that they've completed on their shows (along with photos of the homes they've designed). I thought I would include a few here and give you the link for the rest if you're interested...

Eduardo's Natural Light Fixture

There are some DIYers in blog land that would probably do this light fixture in no time flat. I like the combination of the branches and metal.

Pallet Coffee Table

I've seen pallet tables before, but they were always rustic. Finishing this one in a bright, glossy color gives it a fresh, modern feel.

Ty's Dining Room Puzzle Table

This table is obviously huge, but I think it would be great in a scaled-down version, especially for a kids room play table or desk top. With shorter legs the scaled down version could be cute in a family room as a coffee table too.

Prompted by this wallpaper post, some of you were asking about wallpaper sources, so I did a little research. I know there are a variety of budgets and tastes out there and this is in no way a comprehensive list, but hopefully those of you who are looking will be able to find what you need.

Area Rugs/Window Treatment - Questions Answered

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Phoebe Howard

There were a couple of questions on the "Large Impact vs. Small Accessories" post, so I thought I would answer them in a post in case some of you had the same questions. As with anything I talk about on this blog, these are my opinions based on my experiences, what I've been taught, and personal preference. I've learned long ago that my opinion is not the only one and that I'm not the source of all wisdom and knowledge, so if your opinion or experience varies from mine, I'm cool with that. :-)

QUESTION 1: Do you think it'd be too boring to do solid colors for both the windows and the rug?
ANSWER: There are many successful rooms that are done using solid colors for both the window treatments and the rugs. I've shown one example at the beginnning of this post. One way to avoid being boring, if that's a concern, would be to add trim to the window treatment and use a very textural rug as they did in the room below. If you're not a fan of pattern OR color, even very neutral rooms without much pattern can be made interesting just by using a variety of finishes and textures. This room by Phoebe Howard is a great example of that.

QUESTION 2: How do you feel about rugs on top of carpet? I love a rug on a hardwood or tile floor but not sure about on carpet.
ANSWER: If your space needs an area rug to add a different texture, define a seating area, pull some colors together or add color that doesn't exist, it doesn't matter to me if it's hardwood or carpet, you still need it. The rug in the living room below doesn't look expensive and it's not some totally unique pattern or color, but imagine the room without it. It really defines the seating area and the slightly darker color grounds the space.

QUESTION 3: Are they a pain to vacuum around and under when they're on carpet?
ANSWER: I have an area rug on my carpet in my family room and I've never had any trouble vacuuming on, under or around it. A carpet pad will help keep thinner rugs in place.
